Sterin – How to use Stearic Acid in Candle Making

Sterin wax plays an indispensable part in your candlemaking routine.
It makes all the difference between disappointing, or successful, candles.

Add 10% stearin to your quantity of paraffin wax. – Bætir 10% – %15 af sterin við vaxið
Firstly, melt the stearin in a double-boiler or wax melting pot.

Colouring your candles? Mix the dye/s in gradually, in tiny amounts, until you achieve
the colour intensity you want. Next, add the wax. Heat the mixture up to the required pouring temperature.

Tip: don’t mould stearin candles in latex rubber. It rots these flexible mould types. Use Vybar instead.

Stearic acid, also called sterin, is a saturated fatty acid used as a binding agent for products like lotions, soaps, deodorants and candles. It serves the same function in food products, such as butter flavoring, vanilla flavoring, chewing gum, fruit waxes and butter.

Why use Sterin in Candles?

Using stearin in candles vastly improves their looks and burning qualities. These are some of the benefits of this additive:

    • Easier mould release. Stearin increases shrinkage in candle waxes.
      Auðveldara að taka úr mótunum
The set candle pulls away from the mould slightly, and loosens easily.

    • Intense colour. The classic combination of 1 part stearin to 9 parts paraffin wax produces
candles with vibrant colours. No more dull pinks and lilacs, instead you have beautifully vivid candles.
A ratio of 1:4 produces startlingly bright tones, but might give the wax a soapy appearance.

    • Longer-burning candles. The higher melting point of stearin – 80°C (176°F) – kertin brenna hægar
produces much slower-burning candles, with smaller flames.
Stearic acid candles burn brightly, with steady, unwavering, flames.

    • Less drips and smoking. You’ll spend less time cleaning up drippy messes. – Kertin sóta minna og leka mina
Smaller, neater flames emit less trails of smoke, and protect your walls and ceilings from sooty messes.

  • Harder candles. Candles with stearin survive hot climates, without melting, sagging or losing their shape.

Stearic Acid – Traditionally used as a thickening agent in lotion, this vegetable derived waxy substance is also used as a hardening agent in soaps (at a .5% of your oils as a usage rate). Stearic acid is also used as a hardening agent in candles, vegetable or paraffin based.
