10 Rainy Day Craft Projects for Kids

Rainy days with the kids can be wonderful — as long as you have a good supply of craft materials at home. Here are 10 projects you can do with things most people already have around the house, plus a few extra bits from your local art supply store.
1. 🎨 Finger Painting
Age: 2+ years
Simple and so much fun! All you need is paint (watercolour or child-safe acrylic), and paper. Kids dip their hands into the paint and create pictures and patterns.
💡 Tip: Lay large sheets of paper over the table to protect the surface.
2. 🧶 Bead Stringing
Age: 4+ years
Kids love stringing beads. Use large wooden beads or plastic beads with elastic cord. Great for developing fine motor skills. They can make bracelets, necklaces, or keyrings.
3. 🧑🎨 Stamp Art
Age: 3+ years
Always a hit!
4. 🧀 Play Dough
Age: 2+ years
Make your own dough at home: 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt, 1 cup of water, 2 tbsp oil, and food colouring. Knead it together and get creative — animals, flowers, and figures are always popular.
5. 🌈 Hanging Rainbow Snail
Age: 3+ years
Paint a paper plate in rainbow colours. Cut a spiral pattern from the edge to the centre. Hang it from a thread on the ceiling — it spins beautifully in the breeze!
6. 🖼️ Collage — Cut and Paste Art
Age: 4+ years
Gather old magazines, coloured paper, fabric scraps, and glue. Kids cut out images and shapes and stick them together on a large sheet of paper. Great for practising scissor skills.
7. 🪨 Rock Painting
Age: 5+ years
Collect smooth stones and paint them with acrylic paint or Posca paint markers. Kids can paint animals, patterns, or inspirational words. They make perfect gifts!
💡 Tip: Apply a coat of varnish over the finished design to protect it.
8. 🧵 Cardboard Sewing
Age: 6+ years
Punch a pattern of holes into cardboard with a sewing needle (let an adult make the holes first) and let the kids sew through them with wool yarn. Great for building concentration and fine motor skills.
9. 🔮 Diamond Painting
Age: 6+ years
Diamond painting kits are popular with both kids and adults. Tiny sparkling gems are placed onto an adhesive surface following a pattern. It's calming, relaxing, and the results look amazing.
10. 🎃 Seasonal Art
Age: 3+ years
Connect your art projects to the time of year: leaves in autumn, snowflakes in winter, flowers in spring, and sunshine in summer. Kids engage best when the subject matter relates to their everyday world.
