Ranger Alcohol Ink — What Can You Do and How Does It Work?
What is alcohol ink?
Alcohol ink (alcohol ink) is a highly concentrated, pigment-rich, fast-drying ink with an alcohol base. Unlike traditional watercolours or acrylics, alcohol ink is designed for use on non-porous surfaces — creating the organic, fluid artworks that no other technique quite matches.
Ranger — in collaboration with the artist and designer Tim Holtz — has developed one of the most extensive ranges of alcohol ink on the market.
How does alcohol ink work?
The inks are dye-based, not pigment-based. This means:
- Very highly concentrated — a small amount covers a large area
- Fast-drying because of the alcohol base
- Dried colour is reactivable — add blending solution or isopropyl alcohol to move the colour again
- High colour saturation — striking colours
Which surfaces suit alcohol ink?
Alcohol ink needs non-porous surfaces. Traditional watercolour paper absorbs the ink and prevents the effects.

Main techniques
1. Drop and Tilt
Drop the ink onto the surface and tilt it to let the colours flow and blend. Simple and always effective!
2. Airflow
Use a drinking straw or a special ink blower to push the ink around — creating organic, unpredictable shapes.
3. Alcohol spray
Spray fine drops of alcohol onto semi-dry ink — this creates the distinctive "cell" texture and organic patterns.
4. Blending
Use blending solution and a felt dauber to soften edges and create gentle colour transitions.
5. Layering
Add new ink on top of a semi-dry layer to create sharp lines and depth.

Important tips
- Wear gloves — skin oils can affect how the ink behaves on the surface
- Protect your work — alcohol ink is not lightfast, so use a UV-resistant varnish (e.g. Jacquard UV varnish) on finished pieces
- Ventilation — work in a well-ventilated space where alcohol fumes may be strong
- Start small — a little goes a long way; add more gradually
