Beginner's Guide to Pastels
Leiðbeiningar30 August 2026
What are pastels?
Pastels are sticks of pure pigment and binder. They produce rich, vibrant colours and are easy to use — no brushes or water needed, you draw directly on the paper.
Types of pastels
Soft pastels — more pigment, rich colours, blend beautifully on paper. Oil pastels — creamy, vibrant strokes that resist smudging. Pastel pencils — more control and precision for detail work.
Choosing the right paper
Pastel paper with texture (tooth) grips the pigment. Sanded paper and Canson Mi-Teintes are popular choices. Toned papers (grey, tan, dark) create beautiful contrast.
