Guides1 March 2025By Föndurlist

Tie-dye is one of the most fun and accessible art forms out there. Kids love it, adults love it, and the results are always one of a kind. No two shirts will ever turn out the same!
What do you need?
We carry ready-to-use tie-dye kits that include everything you need:
- Tulip Classic Kit (9 projects) — Our most popular kit. Includes 9 dye bottles, gloves, rubber bands, and instructions. Enough for 9 projects.
- Tulip Princess Kit — Pink, purple, and glittery tones — perfect for a child who loves princess colours.
- Tulip Shibori Kit (3 colours) — Japanese shibori technique with indigo blue tones. Beautiful and elegant.
For those who want more control and a more professional result:
- Jacquard Procion MX — A professional fiber reactive dye that produces sharper, longer-lasting colour. Works especially well on cotton and other natural fibres. Browse our full fabric dye range.
Step by step
- Choose your fabric — Cotton works best. A white or light-coloured shirt will give you the most vibrant results. Wash the shirt without fabric softener before you begin.
- Wet the fabric — Soak the shirt in water and wring out the excess. The fabric should be damp but not dripping wet.
- Fold it up — Here comes the fun part. The pattern depends on how you fold:
- Spiral — Pinch the centre of the shirt and twist. Secure with rubber bands.
- Scrunch — Scrunch the shirt together randomly. Creates a more abstract pattern.
- Accordion fold — Fold the shirt like a concertina. Creates stripes.
- Apply the dye — Mix the dyes according to the instructions and squeeze onto the fabric. Be generous — more dye means better results.
- Wait — Place the dyed shirt in a plastic bag and leave it to sit for 6–24 hours. The longer you wait, the more vibrant the colours will be.
- Rinse and wash — First rinse in cold water until the water runs clear. Then machine wash on a hot cycle (on its own, without other laundry).
Good to know
- Wear gloves! The dyes will stain your hands.
- Work outdoors or in an area that can handle spills and splashes.
- The first 2–3 washes may release excess dye, so wash separately.
- Tulip kits are perfect for family projects and birthday parties.
