Graphite grades
Graphite pencils are graded from hard (H) to soft (B). Harder pencils give light, precise lines while softer pencils give dark, rich tones for shading. A basic set spanning 2H to 6B covers most drawing needs.
Coloured pencils
Coloured pencils like Prismacolor are soft, richly pigmented and blend smoothly for vivid, layered colour. They are perfect for illustration and detailed work. Build up light layers for the smoothest, most controlled results.
Charcoal and paper

What pencils should a beginner buy?
A basic graphite set spanning roughly 2H to 6B is a great start — it lets you make both light, precise lines and dark, soft shading. Add a good eraser, a sharpener and a sketchbook and you have everything you need to begin drawing.
What do the letters and numbers on pencils mean?
The grading shows hardness. H pencils (hard) give light, fine lines; B pencils (soft) give dark, rich tones. HB and F sit in the middle. The higher the number, the more extreme the effect — 6B is very soft and dark, 6H is very hard and light.
