Fabric dyeing is a fantastic way to breathe new life into old garments or create unique handmade pieces. Choosing the right dye type is the most important step — natural fabrics like cotton and linen take Procion MX best, while polyester and other synthetics need iDye Poly.
Procion MX — cold-water dyeing for natural fibres
Procion MX dyes form strong chemical bonds with cotton, linen and silk, giving vivid, washfast colours that last wash after wash. Mix with water and add soda ash to fix. Perfect for immersion dyeing, tie-dye, batik and ice dyeing.
iDye — simple and effective
Jacquard iDye comes in two types: Natural for cotton and linen, and Poly for polyester and nylon. Dissolve the packet in boiling water and add fabric — iDye Poly needs a rolling boil to penetrate synthetic fibres.
Fabric paint — decorating on fabric
Unlike dyes that soak into fabric, fabric paint sits on top. It is ideal for precise patterns, stencils and screen printing. Heat-set (iron) after painting to make it washable and permanent.

What is the difference between Procion MX and iDye?
Procion MX is a reactive dye for natural fibres (cotton, linen, silk) — it forms a permanent chemical bond and gives brilliant, washfast colours. iDye comes in Natural (for natural fibres) and Poly (for polyester/nylon). Procion requires soda ash; iDye dissolves in boiling water.
Can I dye polyester?
Yes! Jacquard iDye Poly is specifically designed for polyester and nylon. You need boiling water for the dye to penetrate synthetic fibres. Procion MX only works on natural fabrics.
How do I prepare fabric before dyeing?
Wash the fabric first in hot water without fabric softener to remove oils and sizing. Wet fabric absorbs dye more evenly. For Procion MX you also need soda ash to fix the colour. Always follow the dye instructions for best results.
