Gilding adds a luxurious, eye-catching metallic finish to almost any surface — picture frames, sculptures, furniture, art and decorations. With a few basic supplies you can achieve stunning results at home.
Real vs imitation leaf
Imitation leaf (gold, silver, copper) is made from a metal alloy that looks like the real thing but costs far less — perfect for crafts, frames and decoration. Genuine gold leaf contains real gold and never tarnishes, but is more expensive. Both give beautiful results.
Gilding size — the adhesive
Size is the special glue that holds the leaf. Water-based size is easy and quick, while oil-based size gives a longer working time and a higher shine. Apply thinly and wait until it reaches the right tack before laying the leaf.
Applying and sealing
Lay the delicate leaf gently over the tacky size and press down with a soft brush. Brush away excess, then seal with varnish to protect imitation leaf from tarnishing. Genuine gold does not need sealing but a coat adds durability.
