Choosing the right surface
The paper or canvas you choose has as much impact on your finished work as the paints and pigments themselves. The right surface absorbs medium well, holds colour and gives your work lasting quality.
Watercolour paper — weight and texture
Paper weight is measured in g/m². Heavier paper (300 g/m²+) buckles less when wet. Cold-pressed has a light texture that holds water well, hot-pressed is smooth for fine lines, and rough gives the most dramatic effects.
Drawing paper & sketchbooks
Drawing paper comes in various weights from lightweight sketch paper (70–90 g/m²) to heavier drawing paper (150–200 g/m²). Sketchbooks are handy for daily practice and travel, while single sheets suit finished pieces.
Canvas for painting
Stretched cotton canvas is the most common choice and suits both acrylic and oil. It comes pre-primed with gesso and is ready to paint straight away. You can also buy loose canvas fabric and stretch it yourself — more economical if you work in many sizes.
Frequently asked questions
What paper is best for watercolour?
Watercolour paper should be thick (at least 200 g/m², ideally 300 g/m²) with strong fibres that absorb water without buckling. Cold-pressed (NOT) gives a slight texture most techniques suit, hot-pressed (HAP) is smooth for fine detail, and rough gives the most texture.
What is tracing paper used for?
Tracing paper (vellum) is semi-transparent and used for transferring drawings, design work and layering. It is popular in architecture, lettering and crafts. You see through it easily to trace images and patterns.
Should I choose a pad or loose sheets?
Pads are more convenient for travel and keep sheets in place. Loose sheets give you freedom to choose your own framing and sizes. Many artists use pads for practice and loose sheets for finished work.
