5 Summer Projects for Kids and Families — Fun Art & Craft Activities

Summer and Creativity — a Perfect Combination

Summer in Iceland is a wonderful time to get creative with the kids. Whether you're stuck indoors on a rainy day or enjoying the sunshine outside, these 5 projects are simple, affordable, and fun for the whole family.

You'll find everything you need at Föndurlist — and most projects are suitable for children from age 4 (with a little help from a grown-up).

1. Rock Painting with Acrylic Paint

One of the most popular summer projects around, and great for all ages.

You'll need:

  • Smooth rocks (collect them at the beach!)
  • Acrylic paint — individual colours or a set
  • Fine-tipped brushes
  • Varnish for protection (optional)

How to do it: Wash the rocks and let them dry. Then paint animals, flowers, patterns, or messages on them. Use brushes in different sizes from our brush range.

Fun idea: Paint encouraging messages on the rocks and leave them in public places for others to find!

2. Tie-Dye T-Shirts

Rainbow clothing that kids can make themselves!

You'll need:

How to do it: Dampen the t-shirt, scrunch or twist it into an interesting pattern, and secure with rubber bands. Apply the dyes and place in a plastic bag for 6–24 hours. Rinse, dry — and enjoy!

3. Candle Making in Bowls

A great project for slightly older children (8+) and adults.

You'll need:

How to do it: Melt the wax, mix in colour and fragrance, secure the wick, and pour into the bowl. Allow to set for 24 hours. Makes a wonderful gift!

4. Watercolour Cards — Handmade Gifts

A simple yet beautiful way to create personalised cards.

You'll need:

How to do it: Paint a lovely background on the paper — a sky, flowers, or an abstract design. Let it dry, then write a personal message. Fold in half and pop in an envelope.

5. Bead Bracelets and Jewellery

A classic summer activity that kids absolutely love!

You'll need:

How to do it: Choose beads in your favourite colours. Thread them onto the cord in a pattern and secure the ends. Simple and so much fun!

Tips for Parents

  • Protect your surfaces — lay down an old cloth or newspaper before you start.
  • Let the kids lead — try not to correct too much; creativity should be free and uninhibited.
  • Host an art exhibition — hang up the finished pieces and put on a show for the family.
  • Choose quality materials — even affordable quality supplies make a noticeable difference compared to bargain-bin alternatives.
