Pans are compact and perfect for travel and sketching, while tubes make it easy to mix large amounts of vivid colour. Many artists use both. Sets are a great way to start with a balanced range of colours.
Paper matters most
Watercolour paper is the single most important factor for good results. Choose heavier paper (at least 300 g/m²) so it does not buckle, and try both cold-pressed (textured) and hot-pressed (smooth) to find your preference.
Brushes and tools
Soft brushes that hold plenty of water give the smooth washes watercolour is known for. A round brush with a fine tip covers most needs. Add masking fluid, a palette and a water container to complete your kit.

Are pans or tubes better for beginners?
Both work well. Pans are convenient, compact and ready to use, which makes them great for beginners and travel. Tubes are handy when you want to mix larger amounts of colour. A pan set is often the easiest way to start.
What paper should I use for watercolour?
Use dedicated watercolour paper of at least 300 g/m² so it does not buckle when wet. Cold-pressed paper has texture and suits most work, while hot-pressed is smooth and good for detail. Regular drawing paper is not suitable for wet washes.
